Landing at New Chitose Airport, most people are just thinking about getting to Sapporo as fast as possible. But honestly? Some of the best parts of this trip might be sitting right around the airport, waiting for you to slow down for an afternoon. Whether you’ve got a long layover or you’re padding an extra day onto your Hokkaido trip, here are five spots I think are genuinely worth the detour.

1. Lake Shikotsu — for water so clear it doesn’t look real

I’ll be honest, photos of Lake Shikotsu look almost fake. The water is that clear. It’s about 40-50 minutes by car from the airport, and it holds the title of one of the clearest lakes in Japan — plus it’s the northernmost lake in the country that never freezes, even through Hokkaido’s brutal winters.

If you’re visiting between early April and November, you’re in luck: you can go canoeing, try kayaking, or even scuba dive in it. Not a water person? Ride a glass-bottomed boat instead and just stare down at everything from somewhere dry. Either way, it’s the kind of place that makes you put your phone down for a second and just enjoy every minute you’re on the water.

2. Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium — a quiet, easy stop

This one’s only about 15 minutes from the airport, right on the Chitose River, and it’s a nice, low-key way to spend an hour. The aquarium has one of the biggest freshwater tanks in Japan, and there’s an underwater viewing area where you can watch the river’s fish go about their day. If you happen to be there in autumn, you might catch the salmon run — hundreds of salmon swimming upstream to spawn. It’s one of those small, unexpected moments that ends up being a trip highlight.

3. Royce’ Chocolate World — for when you don’t even want to leave the airport

Sometimes you just don’t have it in you to rent a car or catch a shuttle, and that’s fine — Royce’ Chocolate World is right there in the terminal. You can watch the chocolate get made, and then, well, you can eat some of it. It’s a great last stop before a flight if you need gifts, or honestly just a treat for yourself.

4. Chitose Outlet Mall Rera — shopping without the stress

A free 10-minute shuttle from the airport gets you to Rera, Hokkaido’s biggest outlet mall — over 100 stores under one roof. Even if shopping isn’t really your thing, it’s worth stopping by Ramen Street inside for a bowl of something warm. It’s an easy way to kill an afternoon without overthinking it.

5. Northern Horse Park — a slower kind of fun

About 15 minutes from the airport, this park is home to around 80 horses, some of them former racehorses, roaming across roughly 50 hectares. You can walk right up and interact with them, and if you’re traveling with kids, the “Happy Pony Show” runs year-round and tends to be a big hit. It’s peaceful in a way that’s hard to find right after getting off a plane.

Getting around: Renting a car is the easiest way to reach most of these, but you’re not stuck without one — several spots run free shuttles, and you can also connect through Sapporo Station by JR train or local bus.
